Our Mission
At VFW Post 5079, our mission is to serve, support, and stand alongside United States veterans who have honorably served in overseas conflicts. We are committed to fostering a strong sense of camaraderie, connection, and mutual support among those who understand the sacrifices of military service.
Through advocacy, community engagement, and meaningful programs, we work to ensure that no veteran stands alone. We honor the legacy of those who served before us, support those serving today, and strengthen the bonds that unite us as brothers and sisters in service.

Our History
VFW Post 5079 was officially established on February 2, 1946, at the New National Auditorium in Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood. The Post was founded after WWII through the vision of Walter Zalewski and the organizing efforts of Air Force Lieutenant Leo F. Kruszynski, who became the first Post Commander. Seventy-two veterans took the VFW oath of obligation at that first installation.
For nearly 80 years, our mission has remained the same: to serve and foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflicts. Throughout our history, the Post has led military honors for Return of the Fallen, provided Memorial Services, supported community causes like the Blood Bank and Polio Aid, and hosted parades, youth programs, athletic leagues, and countless social events.
Today, Post 5079 continues that legacy with a refreshed facility and a full calendar of programs, including our Memorial Day Parade, Veterans Day luncheon, Coffee and Conversation gatherings, and A Clinic Near You in partnership with Veterans Assistance of Cook County. We also host Veteran Paint Nites and Halloween and Christmas parties for members' children and local youth, made possible through the dedicated partnership of our Auxiliary and Rangers S.A.C.
Though times and leadership have changed, our commitment to our members and community remains as strong as it was in 1946.
Celebrate 80 years with us.
This year, VFW Post 5079 proudly celebrates 80 years of service, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to our veterans and the Bridgeport community. For eight decades, our Post has stood as a place of camaraderie, support, and patriotism, honoring the legacy of those who served overseas while continuing to serve those who stand with us today.
Give back to our post.
For 80 years, VFW Post 5079 has served those who served our nation. Your support helps us continue that mission. Donations and community contributions allow us to provide programs, host events, support local veterans, and maintain a welcoming space where camaraderie and service thrive.
When you give back to our Post, you help ensure that the legacy of service, sacrifice, and brotherhood continues for generations to come.
“The willingness of America's veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.”
— Jeff Miller
